"We want a modern, clean website that reflects our brand values." Sound familiar? That's a typical brief, and it tells us almost nothing. Modern means different things to different people. Clean is subjective. Brand values are usually a PDF nobody's read since 2019.

Traditional briefs optimize for the client's comfort - they're easy to write because they're vague. But vagueness costs everyone: designers interpret ambiguously, clients see something they didn't expect, and the revision cycle begins.

Enter the Prompt Framework

We started an experiment: instead of asking clients for a brief, we asked them to write a prompt. Not literally an AI prompt - a structured statement following this format:

"I need [specific deliverable] for [specific audience] that achieves [measurable outcome] by [specific date]. It should feel like [concrete reference] but differentiated by [unique element]. The most important constraint is [priority]."

This simple reframe changed everything. Clients who struggled to write a one-page brief could fill in this template in 15 minutes - and the output was dramatically more actionable.
